The clocks have gone forward, the sun has awoken and with it, we start to see the first signs of Spring! When the calendar hits April, the cherry blossoms, or körsbärsblom, will begin to arrive. You can see their transformation from tiny, pink buds to a blanket of candy floss over the space of just a few weeks. Stockholm is known for its long winters, so it's a relief to see the cherry blossoms initiate spring landscapes as the city starts to transition into summer.

First on the list is Kungsträdgården, one of the oldest preserved public parks in the city. Every Spring, The King’s Garden is transformed into a canopy of over 50 cherry blossom trees that delicately line the perimeters of the park, comprising of a large water feature in the summer months.
During this period, the gardens also host a Japanese Festival that embraces the Oriental culture in the form of workshops, performances, food and art. This is organised by the Japanese Association in Stockholm and celebrates over 150 years of diplomatic ties between Sweden and Japan.
If you are planning on visiting Kungsträdgården during the high season, then be sure to escape the peak tourist times. The park gets extremely crowded which makes it difficult to get a good photo or even navigate your way around. The best time to visit is during the weekday mornings when most of the population are busy commuting.

Situated just 200 meters from the heart of Mariaberget, you’ll find Bysistorget; a small area that hides amongst cafes, restaurants and shops. The groomed gardens comprise of a row of large Bonsai Trees, that were added to the square in 2014. They perfectly complement the cherry blossoms, or ‘Sakura’ in Japanese, giving the square an oriental feel in the Spring months.
While you’re in the area, why not pop over to the Melvqist, a café that sits in the square's gardens. The benches scattered around the area make it a great place to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee. Here, you’ll often spot people on their lunch break having their sandwich whilst observing passers-by beneath the blossoms.

A short ride on the Tvärbanan from the city centre will take you to a lesser known park in South-East Stockholm. The Luma Park sits in the urban industrial area of Hammarby sjöstad, a harbour area that has seen major developments in the last few decades. The park is embedded into its urban surroundings which creates a beautiful contrast between the pink blossoms and the neutral concrete.
What’s more, you don’t have to venture far to see the spring blooms; the Luma Tvärbanan runs directly through the centre of the park, so you will immediately be met with a canopy of cotton candy upon stepping off. As the park sits right by the coastline, there are ferry links to the city centre if you fancy a more scenic route home!
